MISBAH & JOGI CALCULATIONS

Using ball by ball data, summaries of the over-wise performance of each batsman and each bowler can be calculated. For example, it can be calculated that at the time of writing this, Chris Gayle has scored 386 in 316 balls faced in the 3rd over of the first innings of T20 games, and has been dismissed 12 times. The table below shows that in all T20 games, batsmen score at 6.93 runs per over and losed 0.23 wickets per over in the third over of the first innings of T20 games. A comparison shows that Gayle scores 0.39 runs per over better than the average, and is dismissed 0.01 wickets per over less often. Such a record for Gayle can be established for each of the 40 overs. A weighted average of this performance (the weight is the share of the total balls faced found in the given over, for example, Gayle faced 4.47% of his deliveries in the third over of the first innings.)

In the plot on the left, the horizontal axis describes the relative scoring rate. For example '30' on the horizontal axis means "30% better than average." The vertical axis describes the relative dismissal rate. '-30' on the vertical axis means a dismissal rate of "30% worse than average.". For the misbah measure, "better than average" means faster scoring than average and being dismissed less often than average. For the jogi measure, "better than average" means conceding at a slower rate than average, and taking wickets more frequently than average.

For both the misbah and jogi measure, the most desirable location on the chart is the top right corner. This represents a performance which is most favorably comparable to the average, which is represented at 0,0.
